bela

Originally from Paju, South Korea, the musician and performance artist is known for merging pungmul – a Korean folk act rooted in agricultural traditions and linked to past social movements – and vocals inspired by extreme metal. They shape pungmul into a ritual for queer rage and grief with sub-heavy distortions and cries.

Since moving to Berlin in the autumn of 2022, bela was announced as a participant in this year’s SHAPE+ Platform. They have presented their work across different stages in Europe including Berghain, Schauspielhaus Zürich, Cafe OTO, Unsound Featival, and Rewire Festival. Additionally, bela is a co-organizer of Sorrow Club, a mixed event series spanning from music to non-music. Their upcoming album slated for later this year is a collaborative release by Subtext and Unsound.
