Julius Eastman (1940-1990) was one of the great avant-garde musicians of his time. However, the problem with being avant-garde is that it sort of implies that you’re ahead of your time and that you might not get the credit you’re due until it’s too late. Or at all. Especially if you happen to be a gay African American virtuoso. The renewed interest in Julius Eastman’s work is thus a happy one. A truly visionary composer and one of the first musicians to combine minimalist processes with elements of pop music.
Apartment House is a highly acclaimed contemporary music ensemble from the UK that has been captivating audiences all over the world with performances of avant-garde and experimental music for nearly 25 years. The group has been instrumental in shining the light on undeservedly little-known composers, such as Julius Eastman. Femenine will be performed by Kerry Yong (piano), Mark Knoop (keyboard), Simon Limbrick (percussion), Emma Williams & Gavin Morrison (flutes), Mira Benjamin (violin) and Anton Lukoszevieze (cello).
